Gordon Ramsey

About

Gordon Ramsey spent fifteen years lecturing in Social Anthropology and Ethnomusicology at Queen's University Belfast where his research centred on traditional musics in Northern Ireland, with a particular focus on marching bands. In this lecture, he will explore the musical history of parading traditions in Ulster and Ireland more widely, showing the diversity of the music and its connections to other musical traditions both within and beyond the island of Ireland, while demonstrating how historical changes in the music were inextricably entwined with changes in the social, economic and political worlds in which parading bands were embedded.
Performance by the Shankhill Road Defenders Flute Band
